Wholly Moses is the result of thirty years of research. In the beginning Marilyn Pye did not even like Moses as portrayed in the Bible and Moses was just a chapter in another book Marilyn was writing in between archeological excavations near Cooktown Far North Queensland Australia.
Over the years Moses became more important to Marilyn as more in depth research gave her a healthy respect for Moses, the man with no name, the man who never existed according to the latest research in the Middle East. In 1998 Marilyn’s excavations came to a grinding halt when she was no longer permitted to dig at the site when the land was sold.
Marilyn then gave Moses her full attention. New and exciting research fleshed out the life of Moses. Moses was a man of flesh and blood with raw emotions. This Moses does not come from the pages of the biblical book of Exodus, we find the real Moses in one of the most controversial books in the Bible.
The greatest difficulty in writing Wholly Moses was the fine line between satisfying the academic community and making the book an enjoyable read to people who have never read the Bible and know little of ancient Egypt. In the first draft of the book Moses got lost in a welter of facts and figures, details important to the academics but alas boring to most people. The first draft of Wholly Moses was an ego trip according to the author, a flexing of intellectual muscles. All the finer details will be documented in Marilyn’s next book. Every artifact and piece of evidence has a story behind it be it human error, greed, ignorance or just plain nasty. Wholly Moses is for every one, true believers, agnostics, atheists and the curious. Moses has had a profound influence on culture, religion and the Law for thousands of years. In Wholly Moses the mythical Moses is transformed into a real historical character who influenced the world far beyond what the Bible tells us.
